Through the villages of Roncole Verdi, Sant’Agata and Busseto, deeply interlaced with Giuseppe Verdi’s life and musical career. And the magic of the Po River banks which inspired the saga of Peppone and Don Camillo. A musical and cultural journey that is also a taste route, marked by the unmistakable scents and flavors of Culatello di Zibello and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

The itinerary begins with a visit to the places associated with the birth and life of the great composer and leads to a tasting of typical products including the flavours best loved by the Maestro. You will learn to cook the dishes he preferred in order to experience the flavours, aromas and sounds which were the background to his writing and source of inspiration. The programme also includes visiting some of the places associated with Giovannino Guareschi who was born and brought up in the Parma lowlands and who, like Verdi, was able to give life to the typical inhabitants of his homeland: it was Guareschi, in fact, who created the mythical pair of Peppone and Don Camillo setting their stories along the banks of the river Po in the heart of Verdi’s homeland.
Arrive in the Verdi Homeland and visit the birth house of Giuseppe Verdi at Le Roncole with the small church of San Michele and the permanent exhibition “Guareschi’s World”. Transfer to Busseto to visit the Verdi Theatre and the Barezzi Museum. Lunch in Busseto in a typical restaurant imbued with a Verdi atmosphere. In the afternoon, visit to the Renata Tebaldi Museum. To finish, tasting of typical local food products.
Breakfast. Visit a cheese plant to see the various phases in the preparation and ageing of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Tranfer to the banks of the river Po and visit a producer of Zibello Culatello, much appreciated by Giuseppe Verdi. Visit the ancient castle and even more ancient ageing cellars for the curing of Culatello and learn the secrets of its preparation and tips for curing. Tasting lunch in the castle or in the restaurant. In the afternoon a walk along the banks of the Po or a brief trip up the Po, followed by a visit to Villa Verdi at Sant’Agata (temporarily closed).
