Cremona, the city of the extraordinary luthier Antonio Stradivari and the composer Claudio Monteverdi, who marked the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. Piacenza, with its palaces, its museums and its Municipal Theatre, a splendid example of the late Eighteenth Century architecture.

Parma, Busseto, Cremona and Piacenza were the living towns of the great Maestros Verdi, Stradivari and Monteverdi, milestones in the history of music who brought about fundamental changes and immortal masterpieces. In these sites their lives, music and expertise live again while visiting the theaters, the museums and listening to their music.
Arrival in Parma and start the visit with the birth house of Arturo Toscanini in a characteristic area of the ‘Oltretorrente’ or beyond the river; walk through the recently and splendidly restored Ducal Park, arrive in the historical centre. Visit the Farnese Theatre, the Teatro Regio Opera House and the St. Paul’s Chamber wonderfully frescoed by Correggio. Lunch at your choice. Afternoon, step back in time into medieval Parma as you visit the Cathedral and the Baptistery. The evening is dedicated to music with opera either at the Teatro Regio or another theatre. After theatre dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
Breakfast and transfer to Cremona. Tour of the old-town centre: Piazza del Comune, Cathedral, Baptistery, Torrazzo, the Loggia dei Militi. Visit to the new Violin Museum and to its “Treasure box” and demonstration of Stradivarius violins. Lunch in a downtown restaurant. Afternoon: Visit to an atelier of a violin maker’s workshop. Visit to the Ponchielli Theatre and to the Art Gallery. Return to Parma. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Breakfast and leave for Verdi Homeland. Tour of Roncole Verdi (House in which Verdi was born, St. Michael’s Church) and of Sant’Agata (Villa Verdi). Transfer to Busseto and to Teatro Verdi and Casa Barezzi Museum. Lunch in a typical restaurant with a characteristic Verdi atmosphere. In the afternoon walk through Busseto along Via Roma as far as Villa Pallavicino and visit the National Giuseppe Verdi Museum and the new Renata Tebaldi Museum. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay in hotel.
Breakfast and visit to a Parmigiano-Reggiano dairy farm. Transfer to Piacenza and town visit: Piazza Cittadella and Palazzo Farnese, Piazza Cavalli with the Palazzo Gotico and Palazzo del Governatore, Piazza Duomo and the Cathedral, Santa Maria di Campagna. Lunch at leisure. Afternoon visit Palazzo Farnese museums: Pinacoteca, Museo Civico, Museo delle Carrozze … then Teatro Municipale. Departure.

Add a visit to another city with strong musical links, like Verona or Bergamo. You might also like to consider a short cooking course on the preparation of local pasta dishes or on the salumi tradition. These can be organised in historical houses or farm kitchens.
