From the 15th to the 18th century, the surges of love and demonstrations of power of the feudal and Renaissance lords covered the Parma area with about thirty fortresses and castles, which are highly visible testimonies of a period of history that transformed instruments of war into residences and alcoves of refined elegance. They stand among the most important European examples of courtly art, where the pursuit of play, erotic allusion and the taste for beauty blend with the enjoyment of war and gentlemanly combat. The powerful families live on today in the throne rooms, in the frescoed halls of pomp and ceremony and on the battlemented towers and, every now and then, some ghost still returns to let the eternal nostalgia be felt and to announce woeful events.
